Write Business Emails That Get Replies

Most business emails fail for one reason: the reader can't tell what you want. Clarity beats vocabulary every time. These habits make your English read like a confident professional's.

Put the ask in the subject

'Quick question about Tuesday's invoice' tells the reader exactly why to open it. Vague subjects get left for later — and later rarely comes.

One email, one request

Bury three asks in one message and you'll get one answered. Split them, or number them clearly. Make it effortless to reply.

Open with the point

English business writing front-loads. State what you need in the first line, then add context below. Don't make the reader dig for it.

Close with a clear next step

End with a specific action and a date: 'Could you confirm by Thursday?' A vague 'let me know' invites a vague silence.
