Small talk gets a bad name, but it's the social glue of English-speaking workplaces. The good news: it runs on a small set of reliable patterns you can learn.
Openers that always work
Comment on the shared situation — the weather, the coffee, the commute, the event you're both at. 'Busy morning?' or 'How's your week going?' ask nothing difficult and open every door.
Follow up, don't interrogate
The secret is the second question. They mention a trip; you ask where. They mention a project; you ask how it’s going. Curiosity, not a checklist.
Have an exit line
Knowing how to leave makes starting easier. 'Anyway, I'll let you get on — good chatting!' closes the loop warmly and frees you both.
